Dear Friend,

I have been where you are. I have sat in front of a computer myself searching for the "get thin quick" answers. That's why I created The Art Of Weight Lifting... because I was torn in all different directions, not knowing the fitness myths, the scams, and didn't know what really worked.

That all changed when I was given a challenge to change my body the "so-called" right way. (Little did I know at the time that this type of training would change much more than just my body!)

Getting in shape for a woman is fast, fun, and easy when you know what you're doing, and that's what The Art of Weight Lifting is here to help you with. These are the exact workouts, meal plans, and motivation I used to go from 38 pounds overweight to where I am now. (Plus I still use them everyday in my current fitness lifestyle.)

This is my passion, and the ultimate mission of this site is to create a community of like minded women driven by the same fitness goals to not only transform your body, but create a happier - healthier - lifestyle.

All I ask you is to put your doubts, fears, and skepticism aside and give this a try. That's what I did when I was challenged to change my body and it paid off better than I ever imagined.

Sincerely,

taylor-ryan

Too Many Liquid Calories and Chips? - Not a Problem!
By Trainer
Monday, Feb 08, 2010 03:18
Super Bowl FoodThe day after the Super Bowl here in America. I think it's officially one of the biggest party days during the entire year. And that being the case, it's more than likely you let yourself have fun and ate and drank.

Not a problem... you should let yourself indulge a little.

Here's what you should NOT do to get yourself feeling good again:

  1. Don't fast today - Don't not eat food today to make yourself feel like you're losing weight. It doesn't work like that. You need to eat some food and get your metabolism going so it can burn some calories.
  2. Don't skip your workout - Make sure you get a good workout in... and really try to push as hard as you can. This is the best thing you can do because after you workout, you will feel brand new and your metabolism will have gotten another jolt.
  3. Don't be angry at yourself - You can't be perfect fitness or nutrition woman all the time. So don't get made at yourself or make yourself feel like a failure. You're not!
This is one reason that in the nutrition section of our membership community... (which is only $4.95 a month!)... we actually recommend that you have one day a week where you get to eat what you want. It helps to keep you sane, especially as you are learn to make your diet healthier.

I hope you had fun at the Super Bowl and remember to not change a thing. Just keep working hard towards your fitness goals and you together we'll hit them!

Killer Workout You Have to Try... If You Think You Have What It Takes!
By Taylor's Trainer Team
Sunday, Feb 07, 2010 01:26
Wow Taylor and I (Dan here partner and fiance :) ) did a crazy full body - fat blasting - circuit workout. We were scoping out a new gym to do some filming at and rather than weight train, we wanted to concentrate on building up our cardiovascular endurance with a great circuit.

Here's what we did:

  1. Burpie with pullup
  2. Lunge Jumps
  3. Inverted Rows
  4. Windshield Wipers
Each exercise was to be done as many times as possible in a 60 second time period with a 2 to 3 minute rest in between circuits. We did 4 circuits all together.

All of this was done with body weight and we actually created it on the spot... pretty good and really tough.

I would consider this exercise an advanced workout so if you're a beginner, please don't try it. Instead you can do:

  1. Herpie
  2. Slow Lunges
  3. Inverted Rows
  4. Bicycles

I would do each exercise as many times as you can in only 30 seconds and do the circuit 2 to 3 times.

This will not only help you burn your body fat like crazy, but it will also help you build some lean muscle mass and up your cardiovascular endurance.

Have a great Sunday... enjoy the Super Bowl... and stay fit!

- Dan

What's the Role, If Any, of Personal Development With Fitness?
By Dan Boyle
Thursday, Apr 23, 2009 10:03
It's really been bothering me these past couple of weeks. I am accelerating my physical results from working out, but I feel like I have been languishing mentally.

It made me think a lot about what is the role of personal development, if any, with fitness.

I honestly think there is a huge connection and anybody who really gets into fitness will sooner rather than later begin to work on their mental fitness. After all... our mind keeps us going all day too!

I actually have a great opportunity ahead of me to work with a real pro in this industry. He concentrates on something called binaural beats. These a special tones that help you improve performance, relax, or do many other things.

I will keep you posted on what I learn, but really look at yourself and ask if you want to work on your mental fitness too?

Keep improving and get ready because we are relaunching our blog soon.

Staying Motivated To Go To The Gym... The Hardest Part Of Getting In Shape
By Taylor
Tuesday, Mar 17, 2009 07:07
"The best motivating is self-motivating.The guy says,"I wish someone would come by and turn me on."What if they don't show up?You've got to have a better plan for your life." -John Rohn

When you break it all down... the workouts, the clean eating, the results; the hardest part about it all is just staying motivated.

Once you get to the gym then I am sure you're good to go, but when the alarm goes off in the morning are you pumped and energized to throw on your gym shoes and head out the door? Or after work i am sure you would much rather head home for dinner then stop by the gym... but you can do it!

There are morning when I get up (very easily), get my gym clothes on and sit to eat my breakfast... it's during this breakfast time that I realize I am the only one up and I can easily lay on the couch and fall back asleep for at least 30 more minutes before anyone else will ever know! But then I get motivated:

I run through my head my workout, how much I want to accomplish and I make myself remember how good I feel after a great morning workout session. For some reason I am often motivated by the idea that by the time I am FINISHED with my workout most people are just waking up to get ready for work. I feel ahead of the day and one step ahead of 98% of people.

Maybe it's my competitive drive but that's what gets me motivated to get out of bed and out the door. I am sure you have different mental images and thoughts that keep you motivated but whatever they are just keep them fresh in your mind on those slow mornings or even have them posted on your bathroom mirror as a reminder.

Motivation for gym success is what's going to separate you from those that give up and make no gains or reach any goals!

Healthy Joint Supplements-Glucosamine and Chondroitin
By Taylor R
Wednesday, Mar 11, 2009 12:26

Are Glucosamine and Chrondroitin really helpful and healthy for your joints?

Unfortunately, there seems to be one problem with growing older for me... and no matter how active I stay the problem just gets worst (yes, I know I'm young but my body doesn't). The problem?

Joint pain. With my newly dislocated shoulder, and struggling old gymnastics hips suffering from tendinitis and the herniated disc in my back... I am like every other aging American... daily aches and pains.

We all want answers and we see labels and articles each day, but are they for real? Here are the two most common and popular supplements used for joint pain and health but what are the promises and should you (and I) pick up a bottle?

Glucosamine... before getting into the jargon I will say this, I know several people on this amino acid supplement that swear by it. They even say they can tell a difference in their body if the miss just a few days worth of pills. This amino acid is naturally made by the body and is a precursor to the health and building of cartilage. It's thought that the oral consumption will increase the formation of cartilage (protects the joints) helping with pain and relieving arthritis symptoms.

Chondroitin...is the most abundant glycosaminoglycan (just a fancy word) in cartilage and is partly responsible for the strength and durability of cartilage. Chondroitin is also important in preventing the action of enzymes that destroy cartilage.

But do they work? Some studies show that taken alone or together, Chondroitin and Glucosamine don't relieve joint pain in all sufferers... but it has shows some successes in many, especially knee pain.

Glucosamine has had the same affects as ibuprofen on several people but without any of the harmful side effects that can come along. So while it may not promise relieve, it seems to be worth a shot. You may fall into the small group who sees no improvements or you might be one that will never need to pop an advil again...

Though I of course recommend speaking to your doctor as any supplement can have effect you due to medications, such.

Don't forget to sign up for our The Art of Weight Lifting TV Show. It's official we are having the first episode this week. Not sure what day so sign up and we'll give you the heads up.

"Hey Dan & Taylor! It's Jamie. I used to be a personal trainer and currently a practicing registered yoga instructor. So when you invited me to give a professional opinion of the site, I was a little skeptical. However, you guys really went above and beyond with this. That way you integrated balance & flexibility training with weight training... is the missing piece in the fitness industry. You did a great job, keep it up." - Jamie Bailey
