The Fat Burning Power of Green Tea

Green tea has been in the spot light for weight loss supplements for quite some time, but is it for real? Does drinking green tea or popping a green tea pill really help to increase your metabolism and burn off more fat?
I went looking deep for this one. I thought it would be extremely easy to find research statistics and studies on green tea, but it was actually difficult! I never do my research through sites like wikipedia or webmd... I go to real published works of scholars, right to the source! And here is what I found.Drinking 5 cups of green tea a day can help you burn an additional 70-80 calories due to thermogenesis (the body's natural heating up process), that increases your metabolism. Considering the fact that you need a calorie deficient of 500 calories (through diet and exercise) to burn just one pound of fat in a week, this doesn't make much of a difference. There are two natural ingredients in green tea that are thought to induce the thermogenesis are caffeine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful tea antioxidant linked boosting metabolism (as above), decreasing risk of cancer and more. So with weight loss green tea isn't going to be a miracle fat burner, but it's not going to hurt either. After all green tea is loaded with antioxidants that have great health benefits.

- Decrease risk of heart disease
- Decrease risk of diabetes
- Decrease risk of stroke
- Lower chances of dementia
Of course more studies need to be done but here are a few promising findings:
- A Dutch study of more than 3,000 men and women found that the more tea consumed, the less severe the clogging of the heart's blood vessels, especially in women.
- One Japanese study involved 500 breast cancer fighters with Stage 1 and Stage 2 cancers, those that increased green tea before and after surgery, it was associated with fewer recurrences.
- In the Japanese study, 240 men and women were given varying amounts of green tea extract for three months. Those who got the highest amount lost fat and weight and had lower blood pressure and lower LDL "bad" cholesterol.
Overall it might not help you drop huge amounts of body fat, but it isn't going to hurt either. I don't recommend taking a green tea supplement but it could just be a great way to start your morning off with a cup of green tea or a great alternative to a mid afternoon coffee.
