Stop Thinking About Overall Calories!
Taylor Ryan
As I am going through my certification to become certified as a nutrition consultant I am learning so much great info, some stuff I really just haven't considered before but as soon as I read it I go, "well duh!"
The one I want to talk about today is the overall calorie counting that all women love to do. In fact, when I see myself slipping away from my normal habits I will spend a few days counting calories to get back on track. But if we consider what causes the majority of weight gain, it's all about balancing our blood sugar... causing it to go way up and way down with too big of meals or too small of meals causes our metabolism to go all sorts of crazy. It also causes the body to want to store body fat. So in essence the secret to weight loss is blood sugar control, which is why calories per meal is much more important than calories total. Think about it, some people eat just 2 meals a day... but each meal may have over 1000 calories! Think of what that does to your blood sugar... unless you're eating 1000 calories of protein or fat I am going to say it's going to skyrocket and then because you wait so long until the second meal it's going to crash. This craziness spells disaster for burning body fat. Break it up throughout the day so that the mountainous climb and ridiculous fall doesn't happen. For a woman trying to lose weight you should be eating between 200-250 calories per meal. Doesn't sound like a lot? But to keep yourself in a state of balance, you have to eat every 3-4 hours which then means you'll end up with 5-6 meals on your table. Make sense? Look at a baby... babies eat small meals throughout the say to help support their growing bodies and give them the nutrients they need. This is the way we were born to eat! Eating just 3 meals a day is something that society invented... not our bodies.
What if you're not hungry in 3 hours? Then eat a smaller meal, as you do this you're body will become adjusted to it. Here's a tip.... don't eat until you're stuffed. This causes spikes. And don't wait to eat until you're starving that means you've already let your blood sugar fall too fast. Make sense? So that's the story. You'll notice that with this plan you'll have more energy and see results much faster than if you just cut calories overall. For most women (not you) cutting calories means cutting out meals... it's best to get more not less when it comes to meal time!
