The 4 Ways To Set Better Goals... I Mean Dreams... I Mean Targets...
Dan Boyle

How about that attempt at a clever title? The reason why I could not decide on what to call goals (for lack of a better word) is because nobody really knows what to call them. For the rest of this article I will refer to them as goals but then redefine goals to help you hit your weight lifting goals, nutrition goals, or any goals for that fact.

1. Dream Setting

One of my favorite personal development gurus, Dr. John Elliot, doesn't like to use the term goals. He thinks that when you set a goal, you are setting a limitation on yourself. Who is to say that you cannot go well beyond your goal... what are you supposed to do when you reach your goal? Stop?

He likes to use something he calls dream setting. Dream setting is finding a feeling... the feeling that you want to feel when you achieve what you want to achieve. For example, I want to become ripped and tight. How would I feel if I were that way now... I would feel energized and confident. I would have a strength that made it easier for me to enjoy my surroundings and myself.

It is something that you really can't put into words because it is something that you personally have to feel. So try dream setting and see if you can find a better image of what you really want.

2. Make Goals Never Ending

Traditionally goals are something to be met. Nobody even said what do you do once you hit your goal. I think it is important to set goals only if you are willing to do something for the rest of your life...

If you set a goal, your meet a goal, you automatically set a new goal.

You have to commit to this though because once you start, it will never end. I tend to use this mentality with my weight training and everything else in my life. I look at people like Tiger Woods who always believes he can improve... you have to be like that too.

This can get difficult because there will be times when you are about to hit your current fitness goal and as you approach it, you might just set a new one and start going after that. Try you hardest to not do that. Hit the goal... celebrate, and then set the new one. Doesn't mean that you can have the next one ready to be set though.

3. Mini goals up to the big goal

I have never really been able to keep this method going for me, but for some people I am sure that it will work perfectly. So you set your major goal... one that once you meet you will set a new one right?

You then set little targets along the way. These targets more or less become a path for you to follow. This method works really great in business because you work backward from the big goal and lay out the targets to hit. There is no reason why it would be an amazing tactic to use for your weight training.

They key to this is stay consistent with your targets and do not alter the path. I think that is why I never could make this work for me. I tend to get new ideas and try to refine my ways. I would probably be consistent changing my targets... it just doesn't fit.

4. Be able to make a change if you need to

Now whether you like it or not, you are going to fail. You will not fail at every goal you set, but you will fail at quite a few I bet. That is ok because when you fail you have a great opportunity to refine your future goals and figure out better methods to achieving them.

For example, when I tried the circuit weight training for the first time, I got my butt kicked. I failed so bad that I barely got through 1/4th of the workout. Not to mention I injured myself too. Pretty embarrassing because I though I was going to kill it.

Failing though made me realize that I need to work on my over all workout from the beginning. I was a very strong person who can lift a lot of weight, but my muscle endurance was terrible. So what did I do...

I rebuilt my training system and created a path that would build my entire muscle system... from endurance, to strength, to power. Now when I do circuit weight training I can destroy a lot of the workouts.

So learn to love to fail because you can then succeed even better than you originally though.

Use these 4 ways to set better goals. Some may work for you and some may not work... find a system that works and keep using it to improve your life and your body. Just remember to be like Tiger and never stop improving.
